Chapter 9
When Geri's phone buzzed with a message from Nate, she was tempted to ignore it. Who thoughtfully brought a girl food, banged the living daylights out of her, and left her to wake up alone? Surely, that trope was overplayed. Except, clearly, it wasn't, because the morning after sleeping with Nate Castlereagh, she'd woken up to an empty bed. The other side was cold enough that she knew he hadn't left recently, but she'd harboured some vague hope that he'd gone out to get breakfast or something. He hadn't. He'd left without a word, without even leaving a note—the only evidence that he'd been there at all were her strewn-about clothes and the dinner they didn't eat, which he'd helpfully put in the fridge before leaving her high and dry. She'd eaten both the burgers and the enormous serving of now-soggy chips as a kind of self-flagellation then pushed herself through two punishing boot camp sessions to make up for the indulgence. She couldn't even immerse herself in work to distract herself from the emotional turmoil; every time she was in the gym, she expected to see someone arriving with Damien's new equipment or a film crew trailing her brother through the doors to document his McMakeover of the place she loved so well. She even found her yoga sessions less than relaxing, her neck muscles tight as bowstrings from the tension of constantly watching for Damien to storm through the doors and muscle her out of her home.
With that all in the back of her mind, when Nate texted to ask when she was free for another session, she was hesitant. She had halfway decided to ignore it and let him get on with his own clearly very busy life—so busy, he couldn't even take one morning off to spend in bed with her. But then she thought of him sitting on the floor in the group exercise room, heaving in breaths that weren't enough to put colour back in his wan face, and she knew she wouldn't leave him hanging. Not when he clearly needed the help she could easily provide.
And, she reminded her soft-hearted side, not while their mutually beneficial work arrangement was in place. Until she had another lawyer, Nate was her legal advisor. She didn't want to alienate him at this point.
She did maintain a little of her pride, though, sending him back a message that she wrote in a snarky tone, hoping it would come through via text.
G: That had better not be a euphemism.
N: Didn't mean it to be one. I promise not to be inappropriate during this kind of anxiety management.
Geri muffled a snort and promptly found herself a little miffed that she was thawing toward him so easily.
G: I'll believe that when I see it.
N: And when will that be?
G: Are you free tomorrow morning? We can make use of your early rising again.
She pressed send and immediately regretted it. Would he read it as a reference to his early
